Frequently Answered Questions

Can I practice in any state after completing AS-DDS or Clinical Masters Programs in the USA?

Yes, after completing an AS-DDS program, you are eligible to practice in all 50 states of the US (also in Canada, with minimal paperwork). If you complete an MSD program without a DDS, the rules vary slightly across states and programs. On average, you will initially be eligible to practice as a dental specialist in a limited number of states of the US as well as Canada. After completing certain criteria (like the number of hours practiced), you may be eligible to practice in additional states.

Can I directly apply for a PG program in the USA? Or do I have to attend a DDS program first?

A persistent myth among dentists and dental students is that you have to complete a DDS program before applying for PG programs in the USA. This is absolutely not true!

You can apply to clinical residency programs or PG programs or MSD programs (whatever you want to call them) directly after your BDS.

What are the financing options available to international dental applicants in the USA?

International students who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents are not eligible for federal financial aid in the US. Instead, they need to secure private loans to cover their program costs. Most U.S. banks or other private institutes require a U.S. citizen or permanent resident as a co-signer for these loans. However, there are financing options available both with and without a co-signer.
